Amit Shah on Hindi Diwas: Hindi Growth Must Respect All Indian Languages
Amit Shah said Hindi should advance while protecting India’s linguistic diversity, calling all Indian languages vital to the country’s cultural identity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Hindi Diwas, said the growth of Hindi should go hand in hand with the dignity, promotion and protection of all Indian languages. He described India’s linguistic diversity as a major strength and said every language contributes to the country’s cultural identity.
Shah said Indian languages preserve distinct histories, folk traditions and perspectives, while also helping shape values among younger generations. He highlighted Hindi’s role in connecting people across different regions and communities, describing it as an important medium of dialogue and coordination.
He said language is more than a tool for communication, calling it a society’s connection to its history, culture and collective identity. According to Shah, Hindi should not be viewed as representing any single language but as a link that can strengthen national unity while respecting linguistic diversity.
Shah also encouraged young people to learn from the wider world without abandoning their own languages. He urged parents to communicate with children in their mother tongue to help preserve cultural and linguistic connections.
Hindi Diwas is observed every year on September 14, marking the Constituent Assembly’s adoption of Hindi as an official language on September 14, 1949. Shah said the advancement of Hindi would be meaningful only when it takes place alongside the protection and promotion of India’s other languages.
