Mamata Banerjee has backed M.A. Baby’s call for opposition coordination and urged an early INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi amid concerns over the Election Commission.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has backed CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby’s call for opposition parties to coordinate their response to concerns surrounding the Election Commission. The two leaders also spoke by phone as discussions over a joint strategy gathered pace.
Baby had written to opposition parties seeking a meeting to discuss developments involving the poll panel and the electoral process. Banerjee responded positively and called for opposition parties to meet at the earliest to discuss a common course of action. She has also urged Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to convene an INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, according to reports.
The outreach is notable because the TMC and CPI(M) have long been political rivals in West Bengal, despite both being part of the broader INDIA bloc. Their latest communication comes amid opposition criticism of the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and other election-related issues.
Opposition parties have been seeking greater scrutiny of the poll panel and have discussed measures including a fresh motion concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Election Commission has said that disagreements among its members form part of its decision-making process.
The proposed Delhi meeting could bring several opposition parties together to discuss their positions and possible coordinated action. For political rivals who usually prefer separate corners of the ring, the latest phone call marks an unusual moment of coordination.
