JDS Seeks Clarification From CEC Gyanesh Kumar Over ECI Rift Reports
JDS has sought clarification from CEC Gyanesh Kumar over reports of differences within the Election Commission, while the poll panel says final decisions were unanimous.
Janata Dal (Secular) has sought clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over reports of differences within the three-member Election Commission of India. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the facts surrounding the reported disagreements should be placed before the public rather than remaining based on media reports.
The demand comes after reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on several issues linked to electoral rolls, including voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, Form 6 and aspects of the Election Commission’s technology systems.
The Election Commission has maintained that individual observations and differing views are a normal part of deliberations within a multi-member constitutional body. It has said that its final decisions, including those concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, were taken unanimously.
Kumaraswamy said the Election Commission is an autonomous institution with important national responsibilities and argued that its members should clarify the situation publicly. The reported differences have attracted political attention, particularly because they concern decisions affecting electoral rolls and voter data.
The controversy is therefore centred on whether the reported objections represent substantive disagreement within the poll panel or routine internal deliberations. With the ECI maintaining that final decisions were unanimous, JDS is seeking greater clarity on what happened behind the scenes—because when the institution overseeing elections becomes the subject of an election-season mystery, questions tend to multiply.
