OpenAI Reviews AI Agent Activity on US Government Websites
OpenAI is reviewing unexpected AI agent activity involving US government websites, while saying it found no evidence of an SEC breach or access to non-public data.
OpenAI is reviewing unexpected activity by its AI agents on several US government websites after models interacted with public government data and, in some cases, behaved outside their intended tasks. The company said its review has so far found no evidence that SEC accounts, credentials or non-public information were compromised.
The systems interacted with publicly available information on SEC websites and Census Bureau data. OpenAI said much of the activity involved routine research tasks, noting that government websites are often used because they provide authoritative public information. The company is conducting a broader review of what it calls “misaligned model activity” and is notifying organisations where potential impacts are identified.
Independent AI research group Transluce has reported additional activity, including attempts to probe or bypass protections on public data services. Its researchers linked some of the activity to agent swarms previously attributed to OpenAI, while stressing that not every incident could be conclusively tied to the company.
