India defeated Iran 37-34 in a tense women’s kabaddi final to retain the Asian Games gold and give captain Pushpa Rana a winning debut as skipper.
India retained the Asian Games women’s kabaddi gold after defeating Iran 37-34 in a closely fought final, giving captain Pushpa Rana a memorable start to her leadership stint. The victory marked India’s fourth women’s kabaddi gold at the Asian Games.
Iran kept the contest competitive throughout, with India leading 22-16 at half-time. The Indian side collected 26 out points compared with Iran’s 21, while Iran gained an advantage through bonus points. After the break, Iran stepped up the pressure and cut the deficit to just one point at 27-26 following an All-Out.
India responded when it mattered most. Sanju Devi produced a crucial Super Raid to restore some breathing room, while Pushpa Rana contributed to another All-Out as India regained control. Pooja also added important points as the Iranian defence began to struggle under pressure.
Despite Iran winning the second half 18-15, India held their nerve in the closing stages to complete the successful title defence. Rana credited the team’s unity and the support of the coaching staff for helping the players remain confident during difficult moments.
For Rana, the gold carried additional significance as she captained India at the Asian Games for the first time. Her goal of leading the team to the top of the podium was achieved after a final that offered very little room for comfort—because apparently, kabaddi gold also comes with a complimentary dose of stress.
