The on-field tension between Babar Azam and Steve Smith during the ongoing Big Bash League extended well beyond the match, lasting for a couple of days due to what has been described as a cultural misunderstanding.
The incident unfolded during a match involving the Sydney Sixers, when Smith declined a quick single while batting with Babar. The decision appeared to unsettle the Pakistan batter, who was later dismissed for 47 after an emotional passage of play. Babar’s visible frustration continued as he struck the boundary padding while walking back to the dressing room.
Although visuals later emerged of the two players appearing relaxed and chatting off the field, it has now emerged that the issue did not resolve immediately. According to Sixers captain Moises Henriques, the misunderstanding lingered for a few days before being fully addressed within the team environment.
Henriques explained that the disagreement stemmed from differing cricketing cultures. He noted that certain on-field decisions and reactions common in one setup may not always be interpreted the same way by players from different backgrounds. Once the situation was discussed and clarified, the matter was settled amicably.
Smith has since indicated that there are no lingering issues, adding that the partnership between the two during the match was productive and that the episode is now firmly in the past.
Despite the resolution, Babar Azam’s campaign in the tournament has remained challenging. The former Pakistan captain has struggled for consistency, managing just over 200 runs across 11 matches, including a low score in the qualifier.
