Sanju Samson’s 97 Powers India Into Semis

Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 guides India past West Indies at Eden Gardens, surpassing Virat Kohli’s T20 World Cup chase record and sealing semifinal spot.

Sanju Samson’s 97 Powers India Into Semis

India booked their place in the T20 World Cup semi-finals after Sanju Samson delivered a career-defining performance against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Chasing 196 in a crucial Super 8 clash, Samson remained unbeaten on 97 as India reached the target with five wickets in hand and four balls to spare.

Record-Breaking Knock

During the chase, Samson registered the highest individual score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup run chase. He surpassed the previous best of 82 not out by Virat Kohli, achieved against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022.

The 31-year-old’s innings combined patience and controlled aggression, especially after early wickets made the chase slightly tense. He built key partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya to keep India on track.

When the winning boundary came in the final over, Samson went down on his knees in celebration as teammates rushed onto the field.

From Doubt to Dominance

Samson admitted after the match that the knock meant “the whole world” to him. He said he had waited for a moment like this since he first dreamed of playing for India.

The wicketkeeper-batter also spoke about self-doubt during his journey. Having made his T20I debut over a decade ago, he has often faced competition for a regular place in the side. He was initially left out earlier in the tournament but returned in the Super 8 stage.

Samson credited his growth to learning from senior players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying that observing how experienced batters finish games helped him shape his approach.

Tactical Shift Pays Off

India’s management brought Samson back into the XI to add a right-handed option at the top, especially against teams using off-spinners in the Powerplay.

Against the West Indies, he adjusted his game according to the situation. After early wickets fell, he focused on building partnerships rather than attacking recklessly.

He said his aim was to stay in the present moment and react to each ball on merit. That calm approach helped him guide India home in a high-pressure encounter.

Match Summary

The West Indies posted 195/4 after being asked to bat first. In response, India chased down the target in 19.2 overs.

Tilak Varma contributed 27 runs, while Hardik Pandya added 17 in important middle-order stands that supported Samson’s effort.

India will now face England in the second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium on March 5.

For Samson, however, this innings may stand as one of the most significant moments of his career — a performance that not only broke records but also silenced lingering doubts.
