From Neglect to $36M Fashion Empire

Chinese entrepreneur Huang Xuanni overcame childhood neglect and business losses to build a fashion brand with $36 million in annual sales.

From Neglect to $36M Fashion Empire

A woman from central China has turned a difficult childhood and personal setbacks into a fashion business generating $36 million in annual sales.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Huang Xuanni, 44, grew up in a rural family in Binzhou, Hunan province. She was the sixth daughter among seven children in a household that reportedly valued sons more than daughters.

Challenging Early Years

Media reports say Huang often felt neglected during childhood. She studied in a school that required a long walk over mountainous terrain and managed with minimal pocket money.

Despite the hardships, she pursued higher education and enrolled at Hunan Agricultural University, where she studied animal science.

After graduation, she moved to Shenzhen for work in the logistics sector. Her marriage later ended in divorce, and she reportedly lost custody of her daughter. Facing emotional and financial struggles, she decided to start anew.

Entry Into E-Commerce

In 2015, Huang invested 50,000 yuan to open a clothing store on Taobao, one of China’s largest online shopping platforms owned by Alibaba.

Within a month, her store’s sales crossed 100,000 yuan. However, by 2017, business setbacks left her with debt reportedly amounting to five million yuan.

Reinvention and Growth

Instead of stepping back, Huang began studying brand management, business strategy and fashion design. In 2020, she launched her own brand, Mix Selection.

The label focuses on high-quality materials and designs tailored for petite women. It also aligns with the growing “neo-Chinese” fashion trend, blending traditional elements with modern aesthetics.

By November 2023, the brand’s neo-Chinese dresses reportedly generated over 8.7 million yuan in sales. By 2025, annual revenue had exceeded 250 million yuan — approximately $36 million — and the brand had gained nearly two million followers globally.

Message to Other Women

In interviews with mainland media, Huang said she hopes her journey inspires women facing family or societal pressures.

She is now planning to launch an online entrepreneurship course focused on the clothing industry, aiming to help aspiring women entrepreneurs build their own businesses.

Her story highlights how persistence, reinvention and digital platforms can create new opportunities — even after personal and financial setbacks.
