For many Indian households, mornings begin with a cup of chai and a few biscuits. While the combination feels comforting and convenient, a Mumbai-based health expert has warned that this habit may negatively affect gut health — especially when consumed on an empty stomach.
Dr Manan Vora, an orthopaedic surgeon and health educator, recently shared insights on social media about how this popular breakfast pairing impacts digestion and blood sugar balance.
Why Tea on Empty Stomach May Be Problematic
According to Dr Vora, tea contains caffeine and tannins. When consumed without food, these compounds can irritate the stomach lining and increase acid production.
He explained that this may lead to acidity, nausea, bloating or a heavy feeling in the stomach. Over time, frequent irritation may contribute to ongoing digestive discomfort.
The Biscuit Factor
Most packaged biscuits are made with refined flour, added sugar and unhealthy fats. These ingredients are considered “empty calories” because they offer little nutritional value.
Dr Vora said such simple carbohydrates can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This is often followed by a sudden drop, leading to low energy and increased cravings later in the day.
When combined with tea on an empty stomach, this pairing may create a cycle of acidity and unstable energy levels.
A Better Way to Start the Day
The expert clarified that people do not necessarily need to stop drinking tea entirely. Instead, he suggested adjusting the timing and combination.
Having tea after a light breakfast can make it gentler on the stomach. He also recommended replacing biscuits with healthier options rich in protein or fibre, which can help stabilise blood sugar levels and support gut health.
Balanced breakfast choices such as nuts, fruits, eggs, sprouts or whole-grain options may provide sustained energy without causing sudden sugar spikes.
Important Note
The advice is based on information shared by the doctor on social media. It is intended for general awareness and should not replace professional medical consultation. Individuals with persistent digestive symptoms should seek guidance from a qualified healthcare provider.
