England Beat NZ; Pakistan’s Semi Hopes Alive

England pulled off a dramatic victory over New Zealand in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, keeping Pakistan’s semifinal hopes alive.

Chasing 160 in Colombo, England looked out of contention at several stages. However, a stunning late partnership between Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed turned the match around in the final overs.

New Zealand Set 159/7

After winning the toss and opting to bat, New Zealand posted 159/7. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert provided a strong start in the powerplay.

England bowlers fought back through the middle overs. Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed picked up key wickets, slowing New Zealand’s momentum. Despite a late flourish, New Zealand finished with a competitive but chaseable total.

Early Trouble for England

England’s chase got off to a shaky start. Matt Henry removed Phil Salt in the first over, and Jos Buttler fell for a duck soon after.

Harry Brook and others attempted to stabilise the innings, but regular wickets kept New Zealand ahead. At one stage, England required 96 runs in the final 10 overs, with the required rate climbing rapidly.

A spectacular catch by Glenn Phillips further tilted the match in New Zealand’s favour.

The Turning Point

With England still needing 21 off the final 12 balls, Jacks and Rehan launched a counterattack.

The pair stitched together a 44-run partnership off just 16 deliveries. Rehan Ahmed struck crucial boundaries, including a six off Mitchell Santner, while Jacks cleared the ropes at key moments.

In the final over, Jacks found the boundary to seal the win in dramatic fashion.

Impact on Semifinal Race

The result leaves the Super 8 group wide open. While England were already qualified, New Zealand had been in pole position to top the group.

The defeat now gives Pakistan a chance to stay in contention for a semifinal spot, depending on other results.

With the tournament entering its decisive phase, the win has added fresh intrigue to the qualification scenario.
