A 69-year-old woman was allegedly murdered inside her home in Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Wednesday, while her wheelchair-bound husband was present in the house. Police have arrested a 36-year-old neighbour in connection with the crime.
The victim, identified as Shobha, lived with her husband on Pete Beedi in Nelamangala. According to police, her husband has been bedridden since suffering a brain stroke 12 years ago, and she was his primary caregiver. The couple did not have children.
Alleged Motive and Incident
Investigators said the accused, identified as Shivakumar, allegedly entered the house around 4 pm under the pretext of asking for water. Police suspect he had noticed the gold jewellery the woman was wearing.
According to officers, he allegedly attacked her using a knife and later strangled her. He is accused of fleeing the scene with more than 100 grams of gold ornaments.
Police officials said the suspect was allegedly motivated by financial distress. During preliminary questioning, he reportedly told investigators that he was under heavy debt and had planned the robbery to repay loans.
Swift Police Action
Officers from Nelamangala Town Police registered a case soon after the incident was reported. CCTV footage from nearby areas was examined as part of the investigation.
Bharat Gowda, the town police inspector, said the coordinated efforts of the police team led to the suspect’s arrest within six hours of the crime. He stated that CCTV analysis and local intelligence were crucial in tracking him down.
Police also confirmed that the stolen jewellery has been recovered.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities said further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused may have been involved in any similar incidents.
The case has raised concerns about the safety of elderly residents living alone, particularly those caring for vulnerable family members.
Police have urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.
