A 48-year-old Delhi man was allegedly murdered by his friend and accomplices, with his body later dismembered and disposed of in the Yamuna river, police said on Monday.
Four people, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with the February 18 crime. One accused remains absconding, according to officials.
How the Crime Allegedly Unfolded
Police identified the prime accused as Happy alias Suraj (29), a resident of Haryana. He had reportedly befriended the victim, Anroop Gupta, about a year ago.
Gupta managed a canteen at Chhattisgarh Sadan in Delhi. Investigators said the accused was aware that Gupta often wore gold jewellery and was living separately from his family.
On February 18, Gupta was allegedly invited to a party at a rented accommodation in Matiala Extension. According to police, once he reached the flat, he was tied up and assaulted by Happy and his associates, who allegedly demanded money.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said the victim was told to hand over valuables. Police claim Gupta informed the group that his gold ornaments were inside his SUV parked at Chhattisgarh Sadan.
The accused allegedly took the car keys, brought the vehicle to the location and removed the jewellery. When Gupta refused further demands for money, he was allegedly assaulted again and stabbed to death, police said.
Body Allegedly Cut and Dumped
In what officers described as a “brutal and pre-planned act,” the accused allegedly used a machete to dismember the body.
The remains were packed into plastic bags and transported in the victim’s SUV. Police said the body parts were later dumped into the Yamuna river near Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities from Uttar Pradesh were alerted, and coordinated efforts with local police in Mathura district led to the recovery of the remains, officials said.
Attempt to Mislead Investigators
Investigators said the accused allegedly tried to mislead authorities by leaving Gupta’s mobile phone inside the vehicle and keeping it switched on.
Messages were reportedly sent from the phone to canteen staff instructing them to close operations. Another message was sent to the victim’s family claiming he was travelling to Goa.
The crime came to light after Gupta’s family filed a missing person complaint at Dwarka North police station on February 23, when they were unable to contact him and his vehicle was also missing.
CCTV and Toll Data Key to Probe
Police formed a special team to investigate the case. CCTV footage showed Gupta booking a bike ride to Matiala Extension while leaving his SUV parked earlier.
Cameras captured him entering a building but not exiting. Later footage showed other individuals entering the same premises.
Toll plaza data from the National Highways Authority of India confirmed that the victim’s SUV travelled towards Vrindavan via the Yamuna Expressway and returned within hours.
Call detail records helped trace the bike rider who had dropped Gupta at the location.
Arrests and Ongoing Search
During interrogation, Happy allegedly confessed to planning the crime with associates identified as Bhupender, Balram, Neeraj and his live-in partner Rakhi, police said.
Bhupender, Balram and Rakhi have been arrested. Neeraj is currently absconding, and search operations are underway.
A case has been registered at Bindapur police station, and further investigation is ongoing.
Police have not commented on the recovery of additional evidence or possible charges beyond those already filed.
