Central Projects Will Accelerate West Bengal’s Development, Says PM Modi in Singur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that ongoing and upcoming central government projects would significantly accelerate West Bengal’s development, as he laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple infrastructure initiatives in Singur.

Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the Centre remains committed to strengthening the state’s growth trajectory through improved connectivity, transport, and logistics infrastructure. Projects worth over ₹830 crore were launched during the visit.

Singur holds deep political significance in West Bengal’s recent history, having been the focal point of a major farmers’ agitation nearly two decades ago. The region witnessed widespread protests in 2006 against the acquisition of agricultural land for an automobile project, an episode that reshaped the state’s political landscape.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s development focus in a public message, stating that key projects would either be launched or see their foundation stones laid in Singur.

Among the initiatives unveiled were an extended port gate system with an inland water transport terminal, a road overbridge, the launch of an electric catamaran in Kolkata, and the inauguration of a new rail line connecting Jayrambati and Maynapur.

The Prime Minister also flagged off three Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Kolkata with Anand Vihar Terminal, Banaras, and Tambaram, aimed at enhancing long-distance rail connectivity from the eastern region.

Speaking earlier at another infrastructure event in the Northeast, the Prime Minister said public confidence in his party’s governance model has grown steadily over the past year, citing electoral performances across multiple states.

The Singur visit comes amid renewed political focus on development-led governance in West Bengal, with infrastructure and connectivity emerging as key themes ahead of future electoral contests.
