Delhi Police on Wednesday said three people found dead inside a parked car near the Peeragarhi flyover in northwest Delhi were murdered, and a self-styled “baba” has been arrested in connection with the case.
The accused, identified as Kamruddin alias “baba”, was apprehended following an investigation into the deaths of three individuals whose bodies were discovered on Sunday.
Initially, investigators suspected suicide as there were no visible external injuries, ligature marks or signs of struggle on the bodies. However, further technical analysis and questioning of related persons led police to treat the case as murder.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said Kamruddin allegedly lured the victims by promising financial gains through rituals described as “dhanvarsha” (sudden monetary gain). According to police, he operated a so-called tantrik centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad.
Police said Kamruddin allegedly gained the victims’ trust over time and asked them to bring ₹2 lakh in cash, along with liquor and cold drinks, for a ritual. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to preparing laddoos mixed with poison and travelling with the victims in their car.
According to officials, the accused allegedly administered poison through food and drinks while they were inside the vehicle. After the victims became unconscious, he is said to have taken the cash and left.
The three deceased have been identified as Randhir (76), Shiv Naresh (42), and Laxmi (40), residents of Nangli Dairy, Baprola and Jahangirpuri in Delhi.
Police said the victims were in contact with Kamruddin prior to the incident and had visited Loni a day before their deaths. On the day of the incident, they again travelled to Loni and were allegedly in touch with the accused.
Technical evidence suggested that an additional person was present in the car during their return journey. Investigators later concluded that this individual was Kamruddin, who allegedly boarded the vehicle in Loni and exited before the matter came to light.
Motorists had noticed the car parked on a service lane near the flyover and alerted police after seeing three occupants lying motionless inside.
A preliminary examination indicated that the deaths were caused by ingestion of poison. Further forensic analysis is underway to determine the exact sequence of events.
Police also recovered liquor bottles, cold drink bottles, empty glasses, mobile phones, cash, helmets, jackets, Aadhaar cards and other personal belongings from the vehicle.
According to officials, the accused initially attempted to mislead investigators but was later arrested after interrogation. Police added that he is allegedly involved in previous criminal cases.
The investigation is ongoing.
