Foreigner’s Air Purifier Turns Black in 2 Months in Delhi, Viral Video Sparks Pollution Debate

A viral video shared by a foreign resident in Delhi has once again drawn attention to the capital’s severe air pollution levels, triggering widespread concern and debate on social media.

The video, posted by Andy Evans, popularly known online as Aussie Bhai, shows him cleaning the filter of his air purifier after just two months of use. Instead of its original white or light grey colour, the filter appears jet black, coated with thick layers of dust and particulate matter.

In the clip, Evans remarks that he had been meaning to clean his air purifiers and was shocked by what he found. He explains that the filter shown was only one of three air purifiers running inside his home, underscoring the extent of indoor pollution even after preventive measures.

Using humour to highlight a serious issue, he described the filter as resembling a “sheet” or “carpet” of pollution, joking that it could almost be repurposed — a comment that resonated widely with viewers.

Social media reactions

The video quickly gained traction, with users expressing alarm, frustration and disbelief over Delhi’s air quality. While some reacted with dark humour, others issued serious warnings about long-term health risks.

Several users pointed out that pollution is often normalised despite its visible and dangerous effects, while others advised relocating during peak pollution months. One recurring comment urged people to prioritise health, even suggesting leaving highly polluted regions altogether.

Renewed focus on air quality

The viral clip has once again highlighted how air pollution continues to affect daily life in Delhi, particularly during winter months when smog levels spike. Despite the growing use of air purifiers indoors, the video demonstrates how rapidly pollutants accumulate, raising concerns about long-term exposure and respiratory health.
