Mumbai set to get a woman mayor as Alka Kerkar and Rajashree Shirwadkar lead the race after BMC reservation lottery.

Mumbai Mayor Election: Alka Kerkar, Rajashree Shirwadkar Emerge as Top Contenders

Mumbai is set to witness a historic moment in its civic administration as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prepares to elect a woman mayor following the completion of the reservation lottery process. The draw, conducted by the Maharashtra government, confirmed that the mayoral post for India’s financial capital will be filled by a woman from the general category.

Among the leading contenders for the prestigious post are Alka Kerkar, a three-term corporator and former deputy mayor, and Rajashree Shirwadkar, also a three-term corporator who previously served as a Standing Committee member. Both leaders bring extensive administrative experience and strong political backing.

BJP-Led Mahayuti in Strong Position

The development follows the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s decisive victory in the recent BMC elections. With the alliance commanding a majority in the civic body, attention has now shifted to internal deliberations within the ruling bloc to finalise the mayoral nominee.

Senior BJP leaders confirmed that meetings with newly elected corporators will be held over the next few days to elect group leaders and complete the registration process with the Konkan divisional commissioner. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, an ally in the ruling coalition, is expected to follow a similar process.

When Will the Mayor Be Elected?

The formal election of the mayor can begin only after the lottery process is officially concluded and communicated to the BMC House. Once this is done, a special session of the civic body will be convened to announce the election timetable. Traditionally, a notice period of seven days is observed, indicating that the mayoral election is likely to take place around January 28 or 29

How the Mayor Is Elected in Mumbai

Unlike state or national elections, the Mumbai mayoral election does not involve a secret ballot. All 227 corporators publicly declare their votes, and the proceedings are videographed. After the votes are counted, the mayor is declared elected, followed by a similar process for the deputy mayor’s post.

As per long-standing BMC practice, the mayor’s five-year term is split into two equal parts. The elected mayor will serve for 2.5 years, after which a fresh election will be held for the remainder of the term.

Opposition Alleges Irregularities

The lottery process has not been without controversy. Opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena (UBT), alleged that the reservation draw was manipulated to favour the ruling alliance. Former mayor Kishori Pednekar claimed that changes in reservation rules disadvantaged certain categories, calling the process unjust. The state government has rejected these allegations.

Broader Impact Across Maharashtra

Mumbai is not alone in this transition. As many as 15 municipal corporations across Maharashtra—including Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar, Pune, and Nagpur—are also set to have women mayors across different reservation categories following the statewide lottery.

With political negotiations intensifying behind closed doors, Mumbai now awaits the final decision that will place a woman at the helm of its powerful civic body.
