West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase played a decisive role in SA20 after successfully executing a bold tactical move masterminded by Pretoria Capitals head coach Sourav Ganguly during their victory over Durban Super Giants at Kingsmead.
The Capitals, who had struggled for form early in the season, pulled off a crucial win driven by unconventional decision-making. Chase, typically a middle-order batter, was promoted to No. 3 — a move that surprised many — and later became the first player in SA20 history to be retired out.
Chase admitted he was initially taken aback when asked to bat up the order, having rarely featured so high in T20 cricket. However, he quickly adapted, supporting fellow West Indies batter Shai Hope, who went on to register a record-breaking century — the highest individual score in SA20 history.
The decision to retire Chase out mid-innings was part of a calculated strategy to maximise late-innings firepower. While the call raised eyebrows, the Capitals’ camp remained confident in the approach, noting the need to bring in explosive finishers during the final overs.
Hope later explained that while the tactic may feel unusual for a batter in rhythm, the team fully understood the rationale behind it and backed the move without hesitation.
Chase’s impact extended beyond batting. Defending a challenging total, he delivered under pressure in the final over, bowling pinpoint yorkers to deny Jos Buttler a potential century and sealing a 15-run win for Pretoria Capitals. The performance underlined Ganguly’s reputation for bold leadership and tactical innovation, drawing parallels to his past decisions as a player and captain. For the Capitals, the victory marked a turning point in their campaign, showcasing how calculated risks and adaptability can reshape a season.
Pretoria Capitals are set to face Paarl Royals next as they look to build momentum in the SA20 tournament.
