India’s captain Shubman Gill came under sharp scrutiny during the third and final ODI against New Zealand after a dominant counter-attack by Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips swung momentum firmly in the visitors’ favour.
After India’s pace bowlers struck early at the Holkar Stadium, reducing New Zealand to 58 for 3, Mitchell and Phillips launched a relentless assault. Their 219-run partnership for the fourth wicket dismantled India’s bowling plans and transformed the contest.
As the pressure mounted, questions were raised about Gill’s on-field leadership. During the death overs, KL Rahul was frequently seen directing field placements and advising bowlers from behind the stumps, while Gill appeared less involved in decision-making.
Former New Zealand international Ian Smith, speaking during the live broadcast, noted that Gill needed to be more proactive, particularly during periods when the team was under sustained attack. He observed that leadership responsibilities were being shouldered largely by the vice-captain, though he acknowledged that Gill is still learning the demands of captaincy at the international level.
Smith also pointed out the challenge of leading a side packed with senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, noting that managing experienced voices can be difficult for a young captain.
New Zealand eventually posted a strong total of 337 in their 50 overs, powered by Mitchell’s 137 and Phillips’ 106. Despite late breakthroughs from the Indian bowlers, the damage had already been done, leaving India with a steep chase in the series decider. The episode has reignited debate around Gill’s leadership style, highlighting the growing pains that often accompany a transition into captaincy at the highest level.
