At least ten personnel of the Indian Army lost their lives and several others were injured on Thursday after a military vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, officials said. The tragic accident occurred at Khanni Top along the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road, a mountainous stretch known for sharp turns and steep slopes.
According to officials, the bullet-proof Army vehicle was carrying around 17 personnel and was en route to a high-altitude post when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle fell nearly 200 feet into the gorge, triggering an immediate rescue response by Army units and local police teams stationed in the area.
Rescue and Medical Response
A joint rescue operation was launched soon after the incident. Initial reports said four soldiers were found dead at the site, while others were pulled out in an injured condition. As the operation progressed, the death toll rose to ten. Several injured soldiers were evacuated from the accident site, with critically wounded personnel being airlifted to a military hospital in Udhampur for specialised treatment.
Authorities said rescue efforts were complicated by the difficult terrain and weather conditions, but teams worked swiftly to retrieve the injured and recover the bodies of the deceased.
Condolences from Leadership
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
“Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda. We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers. My deepest condolences to the grieving families,” he said in a message.
He added that the injured soldiers were being provided the best possible medical care and assured full support to the affected families during this period of grief.
Pattern of Accidents in Hilly Regions
The incident once again highlights the risks faced by security forces operating in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Just days earlier, two Army porters lost their lives after slipping into a gorge near the Line of Control in the Gulmarg sector while moving towards a forward post. In another incident last year, three Army personnel were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Ramban district.
Officials noted that frequent movement on narrow roads, adverse weather, and challenging terrain continue to pose serious risks for troops deployed in high-altitude and border areas.
Investigation Underway
Authorities said an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary assessments point towards loss of control on the steep road, but technical factors and road conditions are also being examined.
The nation mourns the loss of the soldiers who died in the line of duty, even as security forces continue to operate under difficult and demanding conditions in the region.
