Karnataka HC Lifts Bike Taxi Ban in Bengaluru, Allows Ola and Uber Services With Conditions

In a significant relief to cab aggregators and commuters, the Karnataka High Court on Friday permitted bike taxi services to operate in Bengaluru, effectively revoking the ban imposed last year. The court, however, clarified that bike taxis will be treated as commercial vehicles and must comply with all regulatory requirements, including the use of yellow number plates.

The ruling allows app-based cab companies such as Ola and Uber to resume bike taxi operations in the city, a move expected to ease last-mile connectivity issues and provide commuters with a faster and more affordable transport option in Bengaluru’s traffic-clogged streets.

Background of the Ban

Bike taxi services were halted in June 2025 after the Karnataka High Court declined to stay a state government order banning such operations. The ban was imposed amid concerns over passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and traffic management in the city.

Subsequently, in November 2025, a Karnataka government-appointed expert committee chaired by transport secretary NV Prasad submitted a report stating that bike taxis were “unlawful, unsafe and incompatible” with Bengaluru’s already strained mobility ecosystem. The committee cited concerns over rider safety, enforcement challenges, and the lack of a comprehensive regulatory framework.

While allowing bike taxi operations to resume, the High Court underscored the need for strict compliance with transport rules.
