The Supreme Court has imposed an interim ban on construction and development activities within 100 metres of Rajasthan’s Jojari River to protect its severely damaged ecosystem.
The court also barred hazardous industries and activities that could cause pollution or contamination within 500 metres on either side of the existing flood line, where identified, or along the river’s present flow path.
The restrictions will remain in place while authorities conduct a scientific exercise to determine and demarcate the river’s high flood line and ecological buffer zones. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on September 22.
The order came during suo motu proceedings concerning pollution and contamination in the Jojari River. The Supreme Court noted the serious ecological degradation and widespread damage to the riverine ecosystem, stressing the need for immediate and measurable protection.
Earlier this month, the court directed the Rajasthan government to form an Integrated Coordination Group to address contamination affecting the Jojari, Bandi and Luni rivers.
The Jojari River flows through Jodhpur, while the Bandi passes through Pali. Both rivers eventually join the Luni near Balotra.
The latest order introduces temporary safeguards against new construction and potentially polluting activities until scientific studies establish permanent boundaries for flood-prone areas and ecological protection zones.
