India enforced the follow-on against Sri Lanka after bowling the hosts out for 290 on Day 4 of the second Test in Colombo on Wednesday. Sri Lanka finished 213 runs behind India’s first-innings total of 503/9 declared.
Sonal Dinusha provided strong resistance for Sri Lanka and scored 103, completing his second century of the series. He survived an LBW appeal through DRS early in the morning before attacking the Indian bowlers. However, Saransh Jain eventually dismissed Dinusha to end the Sri Lankan innings.
Jain picked up the final wicket with a sharply turning delivery that forced Dinusha to edge the ball to KL Rahul in the slips. The wicket also marked an important breakthrough for India as they looked to maximise their chances of winning the rain-hit Test.
Earlier in the day, Jain claimed his maiden Test wicket by dismissing Lahiru Kumara. India kept making regular bowling changes, with captain Shubman Gill using his pace and spin options in search of quick wickets.
India decided to enforce the follow-on after Sri Lanka fell 13 runs short of avoiding it. The decision gives India another opportunity to bowl Sri Lanka out and push for victory despite concerns over possible rain interruptions in Colombo.
India are seeking a win to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship race. Rain has already affected the match, making time management a key factor as the visitors attempt to complete a series victory.
