The United States has paused visa appointments worldwide as the Trump administration tightens immigration policies. The State Department said visa services are being adjusted to accommodate a global training programme for consular officers at US embassies and consulates.
Applicants with previously scheduled interviews were informed that their appointments had been cancelled and would be rescheduled. Officials did not specify how long the changes would remain in effect.
The department said the training is intended to help consular officers identify applicants who may become dependent on US public benefits and ensure visa applications are assessed consistently and comprehensively.
The pause comes amid broader immigration restrictions introduced by the Trump administration. Washington is considering the cancellation of B1 and B2 visas for thousands of foreigners who have applied for asylum in the US. The proposed action could represent one of the largest mass visa revocations in US history.
The administration is also considering a proposed additional fee of $103,265 for certain H-1B visa applications. The measure could significantly increase costs for US employers hiring foreign skilled workers, with Indian professionals potentially among those most affected.
The administration has defended its immigration measures as necessary for national security. However, several policies have faced legal challenges and criticism from rights groups.
