Kangana Ranaut takes fresh swipe at Rahul Gandhi amid ‘smash the patriarchy’ row

Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has taken another swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi amid the controversy over actor Kriti Sanon’s outfit in a Raksha Bandhan advertisement.

Ranaut reshared a BJP social media post targeting Gandhi’s “smash the patriarchy” remark and wrote, “Bro, wait. Bharat Mata ki Jay. Shuru karte hain.”

The BJP post questioned the Congress’ record on issues related to women’s rights and representation. It referred to issues including triple talaq, the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Shah Bano case.

The post also highlighted the absence of women in the Karnataka Cabinet, which currently has 33 ministers, questioning the Congress over its record on women’s political representation.

The exchange comes after Gandhi defended Sanon following criticism of her outfit in a jewellery brand’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement. Gandhi said that what a woman wears, does or where she goes is her choice, and urged people to stop trolling women for exercising their freedom.

The advertisement showed Sanon wearing an Indo-Western outfit while tying a Rakhi to her brother and pet dog. The campaign sparked debate on social media over women’s freedom, cultural traditions and appropriate attire during festivals.

Ranaut had earlier criticised Sanon’s outfit, questioning the choice of clothing for a Raksha Bandhan advertisement. Sanon responded that respect for culture and traditions should not be judged by a woman’s clothes.

The latest exchange has brought the debate into the political arena, with Ranaut using the controversy to challenge Gandhi’s comments on patriarchy and women’s rights.
