India opener Abhishek Sharma delivered a powerful performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand, scoring a rapid half-century that helped India get off to a strong start.
The left-handed batter reached his 50 in just 18 balls, hitting six boundaries and three sixes during his aggressive innings. According to match records, it became the second-fastest half-century by an Indian player in T20 World Cup history and the fastest in the knockout stage of the tournament.
The performance came after the young batter faced criticism over his form earlier in the competition.
Return to Form on the Big Stage
Before the final, Abhishek had scored 89 runs across seven innings, which had raised questions about his place in the playing XI. Some cricket experts had publicly suggested changes to the lineup.
However, the team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, continued to back the opener. In the final, Abhishek responded with an attacking innings that provided early momentum to the Indian side.
His innings helped India put pressure on the New Zealand bowling attack from the beginning of the match.
New Zealand Bowling Strategy
During the early stages of the game, New Zealand did not include a specialist off-spinner in their playing XI. Instead, part-time off-spinner Glenn Phillips was used during the powerplay.
Abhishek initially approached the bowling cautiously but soon accelerated as India built a strong start.
Records and Comparisons
The 18-ball half-century placed Abhishek among the fastest Indian batters to reach the milestone in the tournament’s history.
His knock surpassed previous 19-ball half-centuries by Jacob Bethell and Finn Allen, which were recorded during the semi-final stage of the same tournament.
The innings also went past the 20-ball fifty by Yuvraj Singh against Australia in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
India’s Strong Powerplay
With Abhishek leading the charge and support coming from Sanju Samson, India scored 92 runs during the powerplay.
According to tournament statistics, this became the highest powerplay score recorded by any team in a T20 World Cup match.
The fast start provided India with early control in the high-pressure final.
Foundation for the Final
Abhishek’s innings laid the foundation for India in the championship match at Narendra Modi Stadium. His aggressive approach allowed the batting side to capitalise on the fielding restrictions in the early overs.
Whether the innings would ultimately lead to a title victory remained to be seen at the time of the match, but the opener’s performance marked a significant moment in the final.
The knock also highlighted his ability to respond under pressure on one of cricket’s biggest stages.
