Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy marked four years of the Ukraine-Russia war with a video message filmed inside a bunker in Kyiv.
In the nearly 19-minute address shared on social media, Zelenskyy revealed the underground facility from where he coordinated Ukraine’s initial response after Russia launched its military offensive in February 2022.
Inside the Kyiv Bunker
The video showed what appeared to be a Soviet-era bomb shelter located beneath central Kyiv, including Bankova Street, where Ukraine’s presidential office is situated.
Zelenskyy said it was from this small room that he first held conversations with world leaders as the conflict began. The footage displayed compact rooms assigned to different branches of government, including the presidency, cabinet and parliament. Ukrainian flags, cables, gas pipes and emergency signage were visible throughout the bunker complex.
Recalling Early War Days
During the address, Zelenskyy recalled a conversation with then US President Joe Biden, who had urged him to leave Ukraine and offered evacuation assistance in the early days of the invasion.
According to Zelenskyy, he declined the offer, saying he needed ammunition rather than a ride. The remark was widely reported in February 2022 as a symbol of Ukraine’s resistance.
He also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had failed to achieve his objectives and had not broken the resolve of the Ukrainian people.
Ongoing Pressure
The anniversary comes amid continued fighting and mounting pressure on Kyiv. Zelenskyy acknowledged the strain of prolonged conflict, including missile and drone attacks.
He also referenced diplomatic developments, noting that US President Donald Trump, who took office in January 2025, has urged Ukraine to consider a peace deal that could involve territorial concessions.
Despite war fatigue, Zelenskyy’s message aimed to rally public morale by recalling the unity and determination shown at the beginning of the conflict.
Four years after the war began, Ukraine continues to navigate military, political and diplomatic challenges while reaffirming its stance on sovereignty.
