Afghanistan–Sri Lanka UAE series postponed

The Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka white-ball series in the UAE has been postponed indefinitely due to escalating tensions and travel disruptions in Western Asia.

Afghanistan–Sri Lanka UAE series postponed

The scheduled white-ball cricket series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been postponed indefinitely due to rising tensions and military conflict in parts of Western Asia, according to media reports.

The series was originally planned to begin on March 13 and was set to feature three T20 internationals in Sharjah followed by three One-Day Internationals in Dubai.

Travel concerns cited as key reason

Reports indicate that the decision was taken due to difficulties related to travel in the region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The situation has reportedly made travel to and from the UAE challenging for teams and officials.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, both the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) agreed that the series could not proceed under the current circumstances.

As of now, neither cricket board has issued an official public statement confirming further details about the postponement or a possible rescheduling.

Impact on upcoming team plans

The postponed series was expected to mark several important developments for both teams.

Afghanistan’s opening batter Ibrahim Zadran was reportedly set to lead the side for the first time, while the tour was also expected to be the first assignment for Gary Kirsten, who has recently been linked with Sri Lanka’s coaching setup.

With the postponement, these potential milestones may now be delayed until future international fixtures are scheduled.

Broader impact on cricket schedules

The regional tensions have also affected travel arrangements for several international teams participating in tournaments across the subcontinent.

Some teams have reportedly faced challenges returning home due to restricted air routes and logistical complications linked to the security situation.

In addition, UAE and Oman were recently unable to travel to Nepal for matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 qualification tournament.

Uncertainty for regional cricket

The disruption highlights how geopolitical developments can affect international sporting events, particularly tournaments involving travel across multiple countries.

For now, cricket boards and organisers are expected to monitor the situation before announcing any revised schedule for the Afghanistan–Sri Lanka series.
