China Slams Anthropic CEO’s AI Slowdown Proposal, Calls It Cold War Strategy
China has criticised Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for slower AI development, accusing the US of using technology restrictions to contain Beijing.
China has criticised Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow the development of advanced AI, with the state-backed Global Times describing it as a “Cold War playbook” aimed at restricting Beijing’s technological progress.
Amodei recently called for a more measured pace in developing frontier AI systems to give governments and companies more time to address potential safety risks. He also urged the US to tighten chip export controls on China and take action against alleged model distillation by Chinese AI companies.
The Global Times argued that the proposal was intended to limit China’s AI development through technology restrictions and regulatory barriers while maintaining US dominance in advanced technology. It also warned that excluding China from global AI development could increase risks associated with the technology.
Amodei’s concerns have gained support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. He has also highlighted the difficulty of slowing AI development if China and other countries continue advancing rapidly.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump rejected calls to slow AI progress, arguing that American leadership in artificial intelligence must be maintained. He said the country was ahead of China and stressed the strategic importance of winning the global AI race.
The US and China are expected to discuss frontier AI safety risks in September, with the issue potentially featuring in a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
