Kerala Priyadarshini Scheme: 12.62 Crore Free Rides in 100 Days
Kerala’s Priyadarshini scheme has recorded 12.62 crore free KSRTC rides in 100 days, with around 12.88 lakh daily users.
Kerala’s Priyadarshini scheme has completed 100 days, recording 12.62 crore free rides for women on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ordinary service buses. The scheme, launched on June 15, has reported around 12.88 lakh daily users, according to state government figures.
The initiative provides free KSRTC travel to women and transgender individuals and was introduced as part of the Indira guarantees announced by the United Democratic Front during its election campaign. Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the scheme has supported students, workers and daily commuters while contributing to a 43 per cent rise in overall KSRTC ridership, without reducing the number of male passengers.
The government also highlighted an increase in women travellers to tourist destinations such as Gavi and Ponmudi, with the number reportedly rising by 94 per cent. Transport Minister C P John said the first 100 days marked an important milestone for Kerala’s public transport system.
The government does not currently plan to increase the number of Priyadarshini buses. Instead, buses may be rearranged or shifted between routes based on demand. Celebrations marking the scheme’s 100-day milestone are also planned across 93 KSRTC depots.
With millions of free rides already recorded, Kerala’s buses have clearly become a little more popular—and a lot more crowded.
