Maharashtra UCC Bill Likely in Winter Session, Says Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code Bill during the Winter Assembly Session after the committee submits its report.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the state government plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly in Nagpur, once a panel examining the issue submits its recommendations.
The state government formed a seven-member committee in July under retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai. The panel has been given six months to submit its report and includes former judges, a former chief secretary, a former advocate general, a constitutional expert and an educationist.
Fadnavis said the government would move ahead with implementation after receiving the committee’s recommendations. His statement came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said BJP-led NDA governments in 21 states would bring in the UCC before 2029.
The proposed legislation would make Maharashtra another state to consider a common legal framework governing personal matters across communities. The exact provisions, however, will depend on the committee’s recommendations and the government’s final draft.
Fadnavis also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the controversy surrounding the all-vegetarian dinner served at the BRICS Summit in Delhi. He argued that the debate over the menu was diverting attention from India’s diplomatic achievements, particularly the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration.
Fadnavis highlighted that China and Russia signed the declaration, which included references to terrorism and Pakistan, calling it a significant diplomatic achievement for India.
