NEET UG Reform: ABVP Proposes Two-Stage Exam, Twice-Yearly Test
ABVP has proposed a two-stage competitive exam model and suggested conducting NEET UG twice a year as part of a broader examination reform plan.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has submitted examination reform recommendations to the Nandan Nilekani-led high-powered task force set up by the Centre. The proposals focus on making major competitive exams, including NEET, more secure, transparent and less stressful for students.
A key suggestion is a two-stage examination model, with the first stage used to shortlist candidates and the second for final selection. The student organisation has also recommended exploring the possibility of conducting NEET UG twice a year for medical admissions, giving candidates more opportunities to appear.
The ABVP has called for wider use of computer-based examinations, stronger question paper security, uniform standards for exam centres, robust candidate verification and improved data protection. It has also proposed transparent processes for answer keys, normalisation and tie-breaking, along with clear procedures for handling technical or administrative failures and conducting re-examinations when required.
Other recommendations include independent security audits, a national question bank, digital evaluation, an integrated examination management system and a central examination dashboard.
For longer-term reforms, the organisation has suggested better coordination between school curriculum, teaching, assessment and entrance tests, along with competency-based evaluation, career counselling and measures to reduce excessive dependence on coaching.
The ABVP said major reforms should be introduced in phases through pilot programmes, reviews and independent audits. It also offered to present practical implementation models if invited for further discussions by the task force.
