NCERT Clarifies Class 9 Maths Syllabus: Topics Shifted, Not Dropped
NCERT has clarified that topics in the draft Class 9 Mathematics syllabus were redistributed across chapters rather than removed, with the final syllabus expected in October.
NCERT has clarified that topics in the draft Class 9 Mathematics syllabus have not been removed, but some have been redistributed and integrated into other chapters. The council said the draft was released for feedback from teachers, students and educators, with the final syllabus expected in October.
The clarification followed concerns over changes involving Lines and Angles, Euclidean geometry and the introduction of algorithms. NCERT said the curriculum under NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 focuses on curricular goals, competencies and learning outcomes rather than simply counting textbook chapters.
According to NCERT, concepts related to Lines and Angles have been incorporated into Grade 9 chapters such as Propositions and Their Converses and Quadrilaterals. The topic also has a dedicated chapter in the Grade 6 Ganita Prakash textbook.
Euclidean geometry has similarly been distributed across multiple Grade 9 chapters instead of being retained as a standalone section centred on traditional axioms, theorems and proofs. NCERT said the approach is intended to strengthen conceptual understanding and application.
The council also defended the inclusion of algorithms, citing the growing importance of artificial intelligence, data structures and computational thinking. It said mathematical concepts connected to AI should increasingly become part of classroom learning.
Basically, Class 9 Maths may be changing its chapter wardrobe, but NCERT says the concepts themselves aren't disappearing.
