US President Donald Trump is set to accompany Chinese President Xi Jinping to the National Archives on Friday, bringing Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington to a ceremonial close. The two leaders are expected to view the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights as part of the visit. The White House had announced the Archives stop as the final event before Xi’s departure.
The visit has featured high-profile ceremonies, a state dinner and a 90-minute meeting between Trump and Xi. Both leaders have publicly emphasised cooperation and the importance of managing US-China relations, while discussions covered issues including trade, artificial intelligence and international conflicts.
On AI, Xi said the US and China have reasons to cooperate as well as compete, calling for continued dialogue on the technology’s risks, benefits and potential misuse. The two sides have also been discussing mechanisms for communication on AI safety.
The National Archives visit is designed to highlight the historical relationship between the two countries and comes as the US marks its 250th anniversary. Trump had earlier said he wanted to show Xi some of America’s historic treasures.
