Nirma University Forms 3-Member Panel Over Professor-Student Incident

Nirma University in Ahmedabad has formed a three-member committee to investigate an incident in which a professor was seen grabbing a student's collar during a student event. The incident, which reportedly took place during Technofora 2026, came to wider attention after a video circulated on social media.
The video appears to show Professor H K Patel, head of the Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering department, calling a student from the audience onto the stage during a stand-up comedy programme and holding him by the collar. Reports said the confrontation followed a student's remark referencing a dialogue from the film Golmaal 3. The full circumstances surrounding the exchange cannot be established from the short video alone.
Student organisations, including ABVP and NSUI, protested the incident and sought action against the professor. NSUI also called for an impartial inquiry and safeguards against any academic repercussions for the student.
Nirma University Director General R N Patel said the university had spoken to both the professor and the student, and that both had apologised. He said the three-member committee would examine the matter before further action is decided.
The university's inquiry is now expected to establish the circumstances of the confrontation and determine whether any further action is warranted. What began as a college-event exchange has now officially entered committee-report territory.
