Mahua Moitra Moves Calcutta High Court Over Egg Attack, Police Inaction
TMC MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court alleging police failed to enforce a court-ordered security arrangement during an egg-pelting incident.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court alleging police inaction after eggs were thrown at her during a visit to her Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal on September 16. Her plea says the incident occurred despite an earlier court order directing police to provide her security during constituency visits.
Moitra’s counsel told the court that police failed to properly protect her during the incident in Tehatta, Nadia district, where protesters allegedly waved black flags and threw eggs at her vehicle. The High Court had earlier directed the Krishnanagar police district to provide two additional security personnel whenever she visited the constituency for political events or public outreach.
Moitra has alleged that BJP workers were behind the protest and egg-pelting. The BJP has denied that its workers were involved, with a party spokesperson saying the incident should be condemned but questioning the allegation.
The incident also follows an earlier Supreme Court hearing in August, when the bench had questioned Moitra’s concerns about possible egg attacks while considering her plea related to a police appearance. Her counsel later withdrew that petition.
The latest petition focuses on whether the police adequately implemented the High Court’s security directions during Moitra’s constituency visit.
