Make in India Completes 12 Years as India Expands Smartphone Manufacturing
India marks 12 years of Make in India as smartphone production expands and the government focuses on manufacturing more components domestically.
India is marking 12 years of the Make in India initiative, with electronics and smartphone manufacturing emerging as major parts of the country’s manufacturing push. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said India is now moving beyond assembling phones and increasingly manufacturing the components that go inside them.
Government figures show that India is the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer by volume. Mobile phone production rose from around ₹18,000 crore in 2014-15 to about ₹6.27 lakh crore in 2025-26. The government also says 99.2% of mobile phones used in India are now manufactured domestically.
Vaishnaw highlighted the next stage of this expansion, including battery cells and materials used inside lithium-ion batteries. Components such as displays, camera modules, speakers, coils and printed circuit boards are also increasingly being manufactured in India.
The government has additionally notified the ₹62,500 crore Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme, which will run from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31. It aims to deepen domestic value addition, strengthen supply chains and support Indian mobile brands, with incentives linked to eligible manufacturing and domestic sourcing.
Basically, “Made in India” is moving from assembling the phone to making more of the stuff hiding inside it—which is where the manufacturing story gets considerably more interesting.
