PM Modi Meets Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed Ahead of BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at Hyderabad House ahead of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The meeting focused on strengthening India-Ethiopia ties and expanding cooperation in trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.
Ethiopia, which became a BRICS member in 2024, is looking to deepen its economic engagement with India while building on longstanding bilateral relations. Trade and investment opportunities were among the key areas discussed, with 675 Indian companies currently registered in Ethiopia.
The talks also reflected India’s broader effort to strengthen engagement with African nations and amplify the voice of the Global South on international platforms. Ethiopia’s participation in BRICS provides an additional avenue for cooperation between India and Africa within a wider multilateral framework.
The bilateral meeting came shortly before the formal BRICS Summit sessions were scheduled to begin. The summit agenda includes discussions on multilateralism, resilience and the need for a more inclusive global order.
Modi’s meeting with Abiy Ahmed highlights the growing importance of India-Ethiopia relations as both countries explore new economic opportunities and work together through platforms focused on strengthening cooperation among developing nations.
