Rahul Gandhi Speaks to Sahil Wakode Family, Assures Support
Rahul Gandhi spoke to Sahil Wakode’s family and assured them of support as the Mumbai Crime Branch investigates the IIT Bombay student’s death.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke to the family of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode and assured them of all possible support in their pursuit of justice. The conversation took place nearly a week after Wakode's death, as the circumstances surrounding the case continue to be investigated.
Wakode's parents have alleged that their son faced caste-based harassment and mental distress before his death. IIT Bombay had initially said he was caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination, but later apologised for characterising events surrounding his death before they had been established through an investigation.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating the case and has been examining CCTV footage, digital evidence and statements from people connected to Wakode. Investigators have also recorded statements from six people, including three students close to him, according to the report. The statement of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who has been accused by Wakode's parents of making casteist remarks, had not yet been recorded at the time of the report.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining the events preceding Wakode's death. Police have said the probe is being conducted impartially and that all possible angles are being considered.
