Telangana Police Seize Rs 1.38 Crore in Demonetised Notes, Arrest 8
Telangana Police arrested eight people after seizing demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes worth Rs 1.38 crore from a car in Kazipet.
Police in Telangana’s Kazipet have arrested eight people after recovering demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes with a face value of Rs 1.38 crore during a vehicle check.
The police team intercepted a suspicious car near Kazipet Crossroads and found old currency worth Rs 1,38,50,000, along with Rs 6,000 in valid currency, 10 mobile phones and the vehicle.
According to police, the accused allegedly planned to deceive people by displaying the old notes and convincing them to exchange the demonetised currency for valid money. The notes had been withdrawn from legal tender during the 2016 demonetisation.
Cases have been registered against all eight accused, who were subsequently remanded. Police are now investigating the alleged racket and checking whether more people were involved.
The seizure has brought an unusual reminder of the 2016 currency overhaul back into the spotlight. Nearly a decade after demonetisation, someone apparently decided those old notes still deserved a comeback tour.
