Assam Government Approaches Aditya Dhar for Lachit Borphukan Biopic, CM Confirms Talks

The Assam government has initiated discussions with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a biographical film on legendary Ahom military commander Lachit Borphukan. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that talks are underway and said the project aims to introduce the celebrated Assamese warrior’s legacy to audiences across the world.

During a Facebook Live interaction, Sarma revealed that he personally contacted Dhar after being impressed by the filmmaker’s recent work. He said the director is expected to visit Assam in August to continue discussions and explore the vision for the proposed film.

The Chief Minister believes that a large-scale Hindi-language production could help bring Lachit Borphukan’s story to a much wider audience while highlighting Assam’s rich history.

Sarma said the government is committed to producing the film regardless of who eventually directs it. If Dhar is unavailable, the state will approach other filmmakers to ensure the project moves forward.

The biopic forms part of the Assam government’s broader initiative to showcase the state’s historical icons through cinema. In the 2026-27 state budget, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

Lachit Borphukan is remembered as one of Assam’s greatest military leaders. As commander of the Ahom army, he played a decisive role in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where his forces successfully stopped the Mughal Empire’s advance into Assam.

Despite suffering from serious illness during the campaign, Lachit personally led his troops, inspiring them to secure a historic victory. His courage, leadership and dedication continue to make him one of Assam’s most respected historical figures. His legacy is commemorated annually through Lachit Divas, while his contribution to India’s military history remains widely recognised.

Aditya Dhar is currently enjoying the success of his recent films, and while he has not announced his next directorial venture, the proposed biopic has generated significant interest among cinema and history enthusiasts alike.
