Can Cabbage Leaves Ease Arthritis Pain?

Bengaluru rheumatologist explains whether wrapping cabbage leaves on knees helps arthritis pain or just offers temporary relief.

Can Cabbage Leaves Ease Arthritis Pain?

A viral social media post suggesting that wrapping cabbage leaves around the knees can reduce arthritis pain has sparked curiosity online. But medical experts say the hack may offer only short-term comfort, not a lasting solution.

The trend gained attention after an Instagram page claimed that fresh cabbage leaves, when wrapped around the knees, can reduce pain and stiffness. The post referred to a 2016 study and described the method as a form of “local anti-inflammatory support.”

To assess the claim, Dr Chethana D, Senior Consultant in Rheumatology at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, shared her view on the practice.

According to Dr Chethana, cabbage wraps may provide temporary relief for some people, but they are not a proven medical treatment for arthritis.

“Wrapping fresh cabbage leaves around the knees can reduce arthritis pain and stiffness for a short time. However, it is not a cure,” she said.

She explained that cabbage contains natural compounds that may have mild anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, when applied cold, the leaves can act like a cold compress, which may help reduce swelling briefly.

“This cooling effect can make the knee feel better, especially in cases of mild pain or after physical activity,” she added.

However, Dr Chethana cautioned that there is no strong scientific evidence showing that cabbage wraps can treat arthritis or repair joint damage.

Arthritis is a chronic condition that may involve cartilage wear, inflammation or immune system-related issues. It typically requires proper medical care, including prescribed medication, physiotherapy, weight management and regular exercise.

“Cabbage wraps cannot replace medical treatment. Any relief from using them is usually temporary and varies from person to person,” she said.

The doctor also highlighted possible risks. Applying raw cabbage leaves on the skin for long periods may cause irritation or infection, particularly in people with sensitive skin or conditions such as diabetes.

“If knee pain, swelling or stiffness continues, medical evaluation is important,” Dr Chethana advised.

Experts recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional for persistent joint pain instead of relying solely on home remedies.

While cabbage leaves may offer mild, short-term comfort, specialists emphasise that arthritis management requires a structured and medically guided approach.
