In Chamba’s Freezing Heights, a Loyal Dog Keeps a 4-Day Vigil
In the icy heights of Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, where temperatures plunge below zero and survival itself becomes uncertain, a heartbreaking story of loss unfolded — and alongside it, an extraordinary act of loyalty that has moved the nation.
Two cousins, 13-year-old Piyush Kumar and 19-year-old Viksit Rana, who went missing during a snowstorm on January 22 in the Bharmour region, were found dead after a four-day search operation. But what stunned rescuers was not just the tragedy — it was the sight of a pet dog standing guard beside the younger boy’s body, refusing to leave him despite extreme cold, hunger, and isolation.
☕ Nation With Tea moment:
In a land where humans couldn’t survive, loyalty did.
What Happened in the Snowbound Hills
The teenagers had ventured towards the Bharmani Mata Temple area to record videos when heavy snowfall trapped them in the high-altitude terrain. Soon after, all contact with their families was lost.
-
Rescue efforts involved the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Indian Army helicopters
-
Brief mobile contact was established on January 23, but the signal vanished
-
Drones and aerial surveys on January 25 failed due to severe weather
-
Operations resumed on January 26 with ground teams and heli-dropped rescuers
By the morning of January 27, tents were spotted buried under snow. The first body was recovered around 10 a.m., the second later in the afternoon.
The Dog That Refused to Leave
Amid deep snow and freezing winds, rescue personnel found a pitbull, owned by Viksit Rana, alive and guarding Piyush Kumar’s body. For nearly 96 hours, the dog stayed at the spot:
-
No food
-
No water
-
No shelter
-
Temperatures well below freezing
Yet the animal did not move.
Local MLA Janak Raj confirmed that the dog was found standing watch and was later airlifted along with the bodies to ensure its safety.
☕ Nation With Tea irony:
Sometimes, the strongest loyalty in the harshest conditions doesn’t come from humans.

A Silent Question Left Behind
In a country often divided by noise, this story speaks quietly — about companionship, about survival, and about a bond that did not break even when life did.
While humans succumbed to nature’s fury, an animal endured it — not for survival, but for loyalty.
☕ Nation With Tea final sip:
Four days. Frozen ground. No hope of rescue.
And still, the dog stayed.
