Delhi has been placed on high alert following intelligence inputs about a possible terror plot allegedly linked to Pakistan-based banned outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, officials said on Saturday.
The alert centres around religious sites in the Old Delhi area, particularly near Red Fort and Chandni Chowk.
Authorities emphasised that the measures are precautionary but urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
Alleged ‘Revenge’ Motive
According to sources cited in reports, the suspected plot is allegedly linked to what officials describe as a “revenge” motive following a February 6 suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan. The blast reportedly killed at least 31 people.
Pakistan had earlier suggested possible external involvement in the Islamabad incident, an allegation India rejected as baseless.
Specific Intelligence Inputs
Officials said fresh intelligence inputs received on Saturday indicated the possibility of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack.
Two senior Delhi Police officers, speaking anonymously, reportedly stated that initial threat inputs were received ahead of Republic Day celebrations. While those were assessed at the time, new intelligence has prompted enhanced security measures.
Investigators are verifying the credibility and specifics of the latest alert.
Heightened Security Measures
Security has been tightened across key religious and heritage sites in the capital.
Police and central agencies are coordinating closely to monitor vulnerable locations. Measures include:
-
Increased CCTV surveillance
-
Stringent vehicle checks
-
Deployment of bomb disposal squads
-
Dog squads and quick reaction teams on standby
During recent Mahashivratri celebrations, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-rank officer and commandos were deployed at the Gauri Shankar temple in Chandni Chowk as part of enhanced arrangements.
Context of Recent Alerts
The high alert comes amid ongoing security concerns in the capital.
In November 2025, a car explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station reportedly killed more than 10 people. In January this year, intelligence agencies flagged potential threats from Khalistani and Bangladesh-based groups, with officials stating that criminal networks could be used to disrupt internal security.
Authorities have also remained cautious due to high-profile events hosted in the capital this week.
Public Advisory
Officials reiterated that the current measures are preventive in nature. Citizens have been advised to remain alert, cooperate with security checks, and immediately report unattended objects or suspicious movements to police.
Further updates are expected as agencies continue to assess and verify the intelligence inputs.
