The teaser for Dhurandhar 2 finally dropped on Tuesday at the much-publicised 12:12 pm mark, but instead of applause, it triggered confusion, déjà vu, and a flood of complaints from viewers who felt they had already watched it — months ago.
The sequel, headlined by Ranveer Singh, was promoted as a fresh glimpse into the revenge-driven continuation of Dhurandhar. However, fans were quick to point out that the so-called teaser was nothing more than the same montage that played at the end of the first film — now repackaged, re-timed, and re-uploaded.
For a project billed as “highly anticipated,” the reveal landed more like recycled hype than cinematic escalation.
The 12:12 Moment That Backfired
Ranveer Singh had teased the release time a day earlier, fuelling expectations of new visuals, narrative hints, or at least an expanded look at Hamza Ali Mazari’s next chapter. A dramatic poster released earlier in the day added to the build-up, showing a blood-soaked protagonist under pouring rain, eyes locked on revenge.
What arrived instead was a familiar montage — identical in shots, rhythm, and even background score — to what audiences had already seen during the film’s Netflix run.
The internet responded swiftly.
Comments across platforms accused the makers of dressing up old footage as new content, with several users claiming they had earlier shared the same teaser online, only to have it taken down for copyright violations.
Fans Feel “Scammed,” Internet Keeps Receipts
Viewers who stayed till the end of Dhurandhar on streaming platforms immediately recognised the sequence. Social media reactions ranged from sarcastic disbelief to outright frustration.
Some questioned why content that was already publicly available was being relaunched as a teaser, while others mocked the marketing strategy as a classic case of “announcement inflation” — where timing and spectacle substitute substance.
The irony was not lost: a teaser meant to generate excitement instead reopened debates about originality, transparency, and audience patience.
Still Shooting, Still Promoting
Adding to the confusion, online forums have been buzzing with behind-the-scenes videos suggesting the film may still be in production, despite its release being barely six weeks away. Clips allegedly from the sets featuring Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Rampal further fuelled speculation about how finalised the project really is.
This disconnect between promotion and production has raised eyebrows, especially for a franchise positioned as a large-scale action spectacle.
Industry Voices, Mixed Notes
Director Aditya Dhar has previously described the Netflix release of Dhurandhar as the beginning of a “new chapter” for the film, highlighting its reach across 190 countries. Netflix India executives echoed this sentiment, calling the film a pop-culture moment.
However, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, while praising the courage of Dhurandhar as a mainstream project, also noted that some ideological monologues felt unnecessary — remarks that have resurfaced amid the teaser controversy.
When Marketing Tries Too Hard
At its core, the backlash is not about the footage itself, but about expectations. Audiences today are highly aware, archive-savvy, and quick to call out recycled material. In an era where even teaser frames are dissected, passing off familiar clips as a fresh reveal is a risky move.
The result: a teaser that trended not for what it showed, but for what it didn’t.
