A new study has raised serious concerns about the growing trend of using artificial intelligence chatbots for self-diagnosis and medical advice.
Researchers found that AI chatbots — increasingly relied upon for quick health information — performed no better than traditional online searches when it came to guiding users toward accurate diagnoses or appropriate next steps.
AI No Better Than Google
The study concluded that chatbot responses were comparable to search engine results, which are already known to be inconsistent and sometimes misleading for medical queries.
While AI systems can generate detailed and confident-sounding answers, researchers observed that this does not necessarily translate into clinical accuracy.
Risk of Confident Misinformation
One of the most troubling findings was the tendency of chatbots to provide incorrect or incomplete medical information while sounding authoritative.
In some cases, small changes in how a question was phrased led to dramatically different responses — including changes in suggested diagnoses or urgency levels. This inconsistency raises concerns about reliability, particularly for users without medical training.
The Illusion of Certainty
Unlike search engines that present multiple sources, chatbots typically offer a single, structured response. This can create a false sense of certainty, even when the information may not be accurate.
Health experts caution that symptoms can overlap across multiple conditions, and accurate diagnosis requires physical examination, medical history evaluation, and sometimes laboratory tests — elements that AI chatbots cannot replicate.
When AI Can Be Useful
Researchers note that AI tools may still be helpful for general health education, understanding medical terminology, or preparing questions before visiting a doctor.
However, they strongly advise against using chatbots as a substitute for professional medical consultation.
The Bottom Line
AI chatbots are advancing rapidly, but current evidence suggests they are not reliable diagnostic tools. For serious or persistent symptoms, consulting a qualified healthcare professional remains essential.
