A sharp confrontation between the Enforcement Directorate and the West Bengal government unfolded in the Supreme Court of India, as the central agency accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of a “shocking pattern” of interference during statutory proceedings.
The top court was hearing a petition filed by the ED in connection with raids conducted last week on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) in Kolkata. The agency sought directions for action against senior police officials, alleging obstruction during the searches linked to a money-laundering investigation.
Representing the ED, law officers told the court that senior state officials accompanied the chief minister during the raids, alleging that such actions disrupted lawful proceedings. The court also took note of what it described as serious disturbances during related hearings at the Calcutta High Court, expressing concern over reports of courtroom commotion that led to adjournments.
The West Bengal government, however, rejected the allegations. Appearing for the state, senior counsel argued that there was no obstruction to the searches and questioned the timing of the raids, which took place months before the state’s assembly elections. It was contended that the last recorded statement in the underlying case dated back to 2024, raising questions over the urgency of the action now.
The Supreme Court bench hearing the matter observed that the issues raised were serious and warranted careful consideration. The petition, filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, brings into focus the growing tensions between central investigative agencies and state governments, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
The matter remains under judicial scrutiny, with the court expected to continue hearings amid heightened political and legal attention nationwide.
