Uncertainty continues to surround the future of the India–US trade agreement amid conflicting signals from Washington and New Delhi, even as diplomatic engagement remains active. The issue has resurfaced months after steep tariffs were imposed on Indian exports to the United States, including a 50% duty linked to India’s energy trade with Russia.
The latest flashpoint emerged after a senior US official suggested that trade negotiations collapsed because Narendra Modi did not personally reach out to Donald Trump. Indian authorities swiftly rejected the claim, maintaining that discussions are ongoing and that both sides remain engaged in talks aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
Further concern was triggered by remarks from US lawmakers indicating that proposed legislation could allow tariffs of up to 500% on countries continuing trade in Russian energy products. If enacted, such measures could significantly affect Indian exports and broader bilateral economic ties.
Despite the rhetoric, diplomatic messaging has remained mixed. The new US ambassador to India described India as an essential strategic partner and underscored the importance of sustained cooperation between the two nations. Reinforcing this engagement, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which the two discussed trade, critical minerals, defence, energy cooperation, and nuclear collaboration.
New Delhi has consistently defended its energy purchases, stating that sourcing decisions are guided by global market conditions and domestic consumer needs. While no immediate breakthrough has been announced, the latest exchanges suggest that dialogue remains open even as tariff pressures and political statements continue to cast uncertainty over the timeline of a final deal.
