Afghanistan Under-19 delivered a commanding batting performance to post 310 for 4 against India in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 semifinal, setting up one of the toughest chases in the tournament’s history at the Harare Sports Club. Centuries from Faisal Shinozada and Uzairullah Niazai powered Afghanistan to their first-ever 300-plus total against India at this level and placed them in a strong position to reach the final.

After opting to bat first, Afghanistan began cautiously, managing just 42 runs in the first 10 overs as Indian bowlers maintained tight lines with the new ball. Openers Osman Sadat and Khalid Ahmadzai focused on building a foundation rather than taking early risks, adding 53 runs for the opening wicket. Ahmadzai was the first to fall, caught by Abhigyan Kundu off Deepesh Devendran for 31, while Sadat continued to anchor the innings before departing for 39 off 70 balls in the 25th over.

The turning point of the innings came when Shinozada and Niazai came together with Afghanistan at 117 for 2. The pair combined discipline with controlled aggression to put India under sustained pressure, stitching together a decisive 148-run partnership for the third wicket. Shinozada played the role of the stabiliser, rotating the strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries, bringing up his second consecutive century with a composed 110 off 93 balls, including 15 boundaries. He was eventually bowled by Devendran in the 46th over, but not before laying the platform for a late surge.

Niazai provided the acceleration in the latter stages, remaining unbeaten on 101 from 86 deliveries. His innings featured 12 fours and two sixes, and he continued batting despite receiving treatment for a left-arm injury during the knock. Late contributions from Azizullah Miakhil and Abdul Aziz ensured Afghanistan finished strongly, adding significant runs in the final five overs to push the total past the 300 mark.

For India, Devendran and Kanishk Chouhan picked up two wickets each, while Khilan Patel impressed with an economical spell. However, the lack of breakthroughs during the middle overs allowed Afghanistan to dictate terms and build momentum heading into the closing phase.

In response, India began their chase aggressively, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi providing a rapid start before being dismissed for 68. Captain Ayush Mhatre and Aaron George then steadied the innings, keeping India in contention as the pursuit of 311 continued. A successful chase would be the highest ever in an Under-19 World Cup knockout match, underlining the scale of the challenge facing the Indian side.
