Two teenage athletes were found dead in a room at a hostel run by the Sports Authority of India in Kollam on Thursday, prompting authorities to launch a detailed investigation.
Police said the victims, aged 17 and 15, were trainees at the SAI centre. One was an athletics trainee studying in Class 12, while the other was a kabaddi player enrolled in Class 10. The two were reportedly from different districts in Kerala.
According to investigators, the girls were found hanging in a hostel room during the early hours after they failed to report for their scheduled morning training session. Fellow inmates alerted hostel authorities when repeated knocks on the door went unanswered. The door was later forced open, and both were found unresponsive.
Officials from the Kerala Police said the reason behind the deaths is yet to be determined. No suicide note was recovered from the room. Statements will be recorded from fellow trainees, hostel staff, coaches, and family members as part of the probe.
Police added that although the athletes were allotted separate rooms, they had spent the previous night together in one room. The bodies will be handed over to relatives after post-mortem examinations are completed.
Authorities said all angles are being examined as the investigation continues, and further details will emerge after forensic and medical reports are received.
