Maharashtra Civic Poll Results 2026: BJP-Led Mahayuti Surges Ahead as Pawar, Thackeray Reunions Falter

The counting of votes for Maharashtra’s civic body elections on Friday indicated a decisive advantage for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, with early trends showing the ruling combine widening its lead across most of the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls.

Initial results suggest that attempts at political reunions—most notably between the Pawar factions and the Thackeray cousins—have failed to significantly influence voter sentiment. The reunions, projected as major opposition strategies ahead of the polls, appeared to trail behind the Mahayuti in key urban centres.

In Mumbai’s high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) contest, the BJP and its allies crossed the majority mark, according to trends. The civic body election, held after a gap of nearly four years, has been closely watched due to its political and administrative importance in the state capital.

Early trends also showed the Mahayuti maintaining strong leads in cities such as Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik and Kalyan-Dombivli. In contrast, opposition groupings struggled to match the pace, despite pockets of resistance in select wards.

Vote counting was briefly halted in at least one BMC ward following reports of an EVM-related issue, officials said, adding that the matter was being reviewed as per established procedures. Meanwhile, leaders from several parties raised concerns over voting processes and turnout, keeping the political temperature high during counting day.

The Pawar reunion—bringing together rival factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar—failed to make a substantial impact in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where the BJP surged ahead. Similarly, the much-discussed rapprochement between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray did not translate into decisive gains across most civic bodies.

As counting progressed, leaders from the ruling alliance attributed the trends to a development-focused campaign, while opposition parties questioned electoral processes and vowed to analyse the results in detail once final numbers are declared.

With results still unfolding, the emerging picture points to a strong mandate for the BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra’s urban local bodies, potentially reshaping the state’s political landscape ahead of future Assembly and national elections.
